About Fr. Bo
Fr. Bo is a Ukrainian Catholic Priest who has been painting / writing traditional icons for about 30 years. He is currently studying under Dr. George Kordis, and doing his best to keep growing in his skills in whatever ways he can.
One thing everyone needs to know about Fr. Bo is that he is NOT very formal. He tries to be relaxed and real at all times. Sometimes it works.
Food
Snacks both healthy and not will be available the whole time.
Lunch will be soup and sandwiches… I think… If I can convince someone to make soup and sandwiches for us from the parish. If not, I will buy some sandwich stuff and we can assemble them ourselves.
Supper will be voted on during the day, then “Skip the Dishes” will prepare and bring them to us.
If people have special dietary needs, then they will need to bring their own lunches. (Or if you don’t like my “cooking”)
Cost
I normally charge $400 for the beginner Workshop. Intermediate students your price will be starting at $450 as your icon boards will be larger. This includes all the supplies you will need.
The price will be a little higher than that (maybe about $50) depending on the plan for lunch and snack food. It depends if I am doing it all myself… or if someone from the parish cooks for us (and if they volunteer or are paid).
The cost of your Supper is not included. Everyone will pay for what they order (or you can bring your own). The ordering will be discussed in the afternoon each day. One day it might be pizza, another perhaps burgers, another might be… I don’t know… Tacos, or Chinese, or steak, or Italian, or escargot? We will decide together.
I, Fr. Bo, will email everyone about a week before the workshop with the exact price.
Location
This Iconography Workshop will take place at the Exaltation of the Holy Cross Ukrainian Catholic Parish in Edmonton. 9003 153 Avenue NW
On the first day we will enter through the GLASS front doors. The Studio in which we will be working is located at the back of the building, so… you can enter in through the back doors once you know where the back doors are. Signs will be left on both doors with Fr. Bo’s phone number so you can always call him to help you get inside.
Who can come?
Normally I do workshops with new and beginners only, but this time I plan to make it a little larger (and more fun) by allowing some intermediate people to join us also. If you happen to be an experienced master… you can paint with us too if you wish.
I am willing to work with up to 16 people. This will keep the quality of everything up. More people would mean I’d have to run around too much and everyone would get less attention, and we would be more crowded. Therefore, spaces will be taken on a first come first served basis.
Ages
This is for primarily for adults, but older teens can participate if they are mature. Likewise adults who are not able to sit/stand all day and work on a project for 5 days in a row probably should discern carefully. People can take breaks to move around whenever they wish, but there will be a lot of “table time”.
What will we paint?
Beginners will likely paint an Icon of the Theotokos (Mother of God), and the intermediates will work on an icon of the Annunciation.
Can you bring your own projects??? Yes, but I will be focused on having everyone proceed together. I can work with people a little when there is time between things.
Can you bring your own brushes? Sure if you wish. I will have some for you, but if you like your own tools that’s cool too.
What else can I tell you….?
This time around I will try to do a little more teaching about drawing/composing icons in addition to painting as we will have a few more hours than a typical “long weekend” workshop that I normally do.
Also, since we have a church available to us, we will tour the church space and talk about how icons can be painted on the walls and ceilings. (Holy Cross Parish does not have many icons other than on the Iconostasis. YET.)
